General Information About Alexandria

The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria, known as “the Pearl of the Mediterranean“, has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. Its ambience and cultural heritage is different from the rest of the country.

Founded by Alexander the Great in 331. C., Alexandria became the capital of Graeco-Roman Egypt. Alexandria was also the center of learning in the ancient world.Situated on the north of the country and with more than four million inhabitants, Alexandria is Egypt’s main port and one of the most important in the Mediterranean.

Relatively new discoveries in the Eastern Harbor involve two different sites. Around Fort Qaitbay hundreds of objects were discovered, including what experts believe are the remains of the Pharos Lighthouse, one of the ancient wonders of the world. In the southeast part of the port, archaeologists have apparently found the Royal Quarters, including granite columns and fabulous statues, including one of Isis and a Sphinx with a head that was thought to be the father of Cleopatra.

Alexandria Culture and History

Culture

In ancient times, Alexandria was one of the most famous cities in the world and was founded around a pharaonic population by Alexander the Great. Alexandria became the center of Greek culture in the Hellenistic period so when the Romans arrived all Egypt was bilingual.

This city was the capital of Egypt for about 1000 years, until the Muslim conquest of this country. Until today this city remains a popular holiday destination.

History

The city was historically known for its Lighthouse. The Lighthouse of Alexandria, built in the 3th century B.C. and destroyed by two earthquakes in the 14th century, it constituted for nearly two millennia one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. With a height of about 130 meters it was located on the island of Pharos.

Another great monument of Alexandria was its library, where almost 1,000,000 documents were kept and then mysteriously disappeared in destruction. The new library was built in 2003 and it is worth visiting.

Great article, thanks for the tips! Indeed, Egypt is a country that needs no introduction, with its gorgeous sweeping deserts as well as some of the most iconic structures on earth. However, the country has one of the highest numbers of tourist targeted scams globally: https://travelscams.org/africa/common-tourist-scams-egypt/

Do be wary of the unlicensed touts, papyrus scroll museums, camel handlers, tours with hidden extras, Valley of the Kings photography scam, show me your ticket scam, public beach scam, inflated prices, friendship gifts, postcard scam, scarf photo scam, entry visa scam, horse carriage scam, felucca scam, tourist menu scam and many more!
